1801

Vanadium was originally discovered in Mexico in its natural state by Andres Manuel del Rio in 1801.  It wasn’t until 1830 that vanadium was identified as an element by Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefstrom and as they say, the rest is history.  With the Industrial Revolution in full swing in the 1830’s, stronger, harder, and tougher steels were in great demands and only Swedish steels met these specific demands due to vanadium which occurred naturally in Swedish ores.  The only problem – low Vanadium concentration levels made extraction extremely expensive and was considered one of the world’s rarest metals in 1890’s with a value of $4,792 per pound!
